St. Bernard’s School

A small school where each boy is cared for deeply but not babied.  Emphasis on reading and writing with great attention to public speaking.  Strong math and technology areas with art and music important parts of the curriculum.  Foreign languages introduced in middle school and Latin is required.

St. Hilda’s & St. Hugh’s School

St. Hilda's & St. Hugh's School is an independent Episcopal school for boys and girls, educating beginners (age 2) through eighth grade. Founded in 1950, the school endeavors to create and educate a community diverse in race, culture, socioeconomic status, and religious beliefs. Our founder, the Reverend Mother Ruth, a biracial nun from Harlem envisioned a school that would reflect the diversity of New York City. It was her hope that "an Episcopalian who attends our school would become a better Episcopalian, a Jewish child a better Jew, and an agnostic a better agnostic". This vision remains a daily source of inspiration and guidance to us.

Our play-based early childhood program leads to a traditional liberal arts curriculum. We believe in the power of a traditional liberal arts education, supplemented by innovative practices and resources. We teach subjects and skills that have endured for good reason, while at the same time, we live joyfully, thoughtfully, and responsibly in today's world.

One of our community's defining characteristics is a sense of compassion and commitment to serving our neighbors. Community service gives all members of the school an important opportunity to see the effect their lives can have on those in need.

Our school was built expressly for the purpose of educating young children. It has been thoughtfully, and thoroughly renovated over the past 15 years. While we have over 80,000-square-feet at our disposal, we believe in small, intimate class sizes.
