About Hunter College Elementary School

Elementary School

Hunter College Elementary School (HCES) is a publicly-funded (tuition-free) school that serves a diverse population of children who have been identified as intellectually talented. Hunter College Elementary School is one of the oldest schools for intellectually-gifted students in the country. Our curriculum is characterized by high expectations and designed to facilitate the development of students’ creative and critical-thinking skills. The individual interests of Hunter students are what define curriculum development and implementation. The program at HCES enables students to examine topics in great depth, to accelerate their learning when appropriate, and to strive for a high standard of processing and articulating ideas.

In addition to developing their capabilities, HCES’s mission is to nurture the social and emotional development of our students by encouraging them to be caring, compassionate, and responsible citizens. We prepare our students to be life-long learners, leaders, and thinkers. Positive relationships that are formed between children and teachers are fundamental and grow in an environment that celebrates the cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity of its unique educational community. We take great pride in the warm family environment that characterizes our school, comprised of caring faculty, dynamic students, and committed parents.

COVID-19 Admission Adjustments

How are you adjusting your admission process? Due to COVID-19, and under the guidance of the American Psychological Association (APA), Round 1 testers have implemented comprehensive precautions to help ensure the safety of applicants and families as they provide in-person testing. To date, virtual testing is NOT an option. Families will be provided with a type of "Informed Consent for In-Person Services" form that must be signed and returned in order to keep the Round 1 testing appointment. The form outlines your and the tester's responsibilities to minimize exposure in light of the COVID-19 public health crisis. All HCES candidates and their families will be required to follow safety protocols as outlined in the form. No candidate is exempt from adhering to these protocols. Failure to follow any of the safety guidelines or protocols provided by Hunter College Elementary School or by the tester may result in immediate disqualification from the process.

Are you conducting tours/open houses? Due to space regulations, Hunter College Elementary School hopes to host a virtual open house for prospective families in fall 2021. Applicants will be provided with more information.

Are both parents expected to attend tours/presentations? no

What is expected of families? HCES expects all parents to carefully read all application instructions and follow all guidelines.

Nothing from January 1, 2021 to January 1, 2023.
